In 2008, at the request of the state environment department, Rio Tinto Alcan Boyne Smelters Ltd (BSL) commissioned a comprehensive air emissions monitoring and impact assessment program to investigate potential impacts to air quality associated with its alumina smelting at Boyne Island near Gladstone. This study involved identifying, characterising and quantifying more than 100 point, fugitive and line sources.
Katestone developed a meteorological and atmospheric dispersion modelling system for local and regional air impacts covering routine and non-routine operations. The system’s performance was evaluated for predicting local meteorology and the impact of hydrogen fluoride, a key pollutant from alumina smelting. The modelling system was then employed to provide a daily forecast of air quality impacts.
BSL used the forecast to manage air quality impacts across multiple operational scenarios, including planning maintenance shutdowns. In accordance with the specification, Katestone provided air pollution forecasts directly to the department in real time.
